Rich and creamy hot chocolate

I have always been pretty obsessed with hot chocolate come winter and fall. Growing up in New England, we brought it on every ski trip - and my sister and I would make it every evening together. There’s something so cozy and perfect about enjoying this at end of a cold day.

While I often will just use my favorite cocoa powder (Swiss Miss Dark Chocolate), this is my favorite recipe when I want something more homemade and decadent. This hot chocolate is super thick and creamy and amazing after a cold day. I don’t like overly sweet things so feel free to add sugar or extra cocoa powder to this if you would like things a little sweeter. Check out the recipe below!

Servings: 1

Ingredients

  • 2/3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1/4 tsp espresso powder

  • Pinch of salt

  • 2 tbsp water

  • 1 cup milk any percentage

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

  • 2 tbsp dark chocolate chips chopped (substitute semi-sweet if you prefer)

Instructions

  1. In a small pot, combine the salt, cocoa powder, espresso powder, and water. Whisk over medium-high heat until smooth. Whisk in milk and cream and heat until steaming.

  2. Turn down heat to medium and stir in chocolate until melted and smooth.

  3. Transfer to a mug (maybe one of these!) and serve topped with marshmallows or whipped cream if desired - and enjoy!
